Do pets understand that they will eventually die?
We know animals can recognize danger, react to dead companions, grieve, and sometimes change behavior when another animal disappears. But we don’t know whether pets such as dogs, cats, or parrots understand death as a permanent state—or understand their own mortality the way humans can.

There’s no good evidence that dogs, cats, or parrots understand death in the full human sense: that it is permanent, affects every living thing, and will eventually happen to them.
Animals can notice that a companion is no longer moving or responding, and they may react to the absence with changes in behavior—such as searching, calling, eating less, or seeking more attention. These reactions can reflect attachment, disrupted routines, and responses to familiar smells and cues. They don’t, by themselves, show that an animal understands death as irreversible.
Pets can also learn to recognize danger or signs of illness and may respond to their own discomfort. But that is different from understanding their future mortality. Because animals can’t explain their thoughts, the limits of what they understand remain uncertain.
If a pet’s behavior changes after a companion dies or disappears, keep routines steady and offer calm attention. Contact a veterinarian if the changes are severe, persist, or include not eating.
